Virtual Burn 2021 FAQ

Do you have questions?

What is the Virtual Burn?

The Virtual Burn is a global, digital incarnation of the Burning Man event, culture and community, taking place August 22 – September 7, 2021. Six independent virtual event creators in the Burning Man community are building a constellation of experiences for 2021, which we’re collectively calling the Virtual Burn. These radically inclusive virtual worlds will invite anybody with an internet connection, anywhere on the planet, to contribute to the culture we so enjoy, whether they’re using a virtual reality headset, a desktop computer, or a mobile device.

Which experiences are participating in the Virtual Burn this year?

The six Worlds participating in Virtual Burn 2021 are:

  1.    SparkleVerse
  2.    Dusty Multiverse
  3.    BRCvr
  4.    Build-A-Burn
  5.    The Infinite Playa
  6.    Burn Week: Global Live Stream
What about BURN2?

BURN2 is an official virtual Burning Man Regional event running on the SecondLife platform. This vibrant virtual community has been going strong since 2003, hosting periodic official events. BURN2 will run concurrently with the Virtual Burn. You’re encouraged to visit and participate!

Who is responsible for the Virtual Burn Worlds?

Each World is being independently produced by members of the Burning Man community. Burning Man Project is facilitating your participation in these independent experiences by providing information and access to tickets on behalf of the Worlds’ producers, subject to the terms and conditions available here. Links to more information about each World can be found at the bottom of this FAQ.

How can I participate in or volunteer for Virtual Burn experiences?

Visit our participation intake site, learn about the ways you can get involved, then submit your participation form to get started!

Options to get involved include:

  • Bring your project (art, theme camps, mutant vehicles)
  • Bring your tech skills (being a World creator)
  • Bring an activity (events and performances)
  • Be a volunteer (any and all skills)
When is the Virtual Burn taking place this year?

Gates will open (meaning that the Worlds will be accessible) for the Virtual Burn on Sunday, August 22, and will close on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at midnight PDT.

So what happens to the 10 Principles in the virtual realm?

All participating Worlds are committed to hosting environments that adhere to and support the spirit of Burning Man’s 10 Principles, and participants are encouraged to learn about them and actively put them into practice while participating in the Virtual Burn.

How can I make a donation to support Burning Man Project?

We welcome and appreciate your generous donations to keep our community fires burning! You can make a contribution via the Burning Man Project donation page. You can also add an optional donation to Burning Man Project during the ticket purchase process.

Burning Man Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. Thank you!

Do I need a ticket to participate in the Virtual Burn?

Yes, each World requires its own ticket to access, and you can order tickets to all Worlds here. When you have ordered your ticket(s), you will receive an email confirmation that contains your ticket code. Around August 20, you’ll receive a second email with instructions for how to access your chosen experience(s), so look out for that in your inbox!

If I have a question about my Virtual Burn ticket order or something goes wrong during the purchase process, what do I do?

Please reach out to vb-inquiries@burningman.org for help with ticketing issues; you will have an email response within one business day, or up to two business days during a busy period. Emails are generally answered Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm PDT.

If you experienced an issue with your ticket transaction, please provide us with the details so we can investigate on our end. Please include the transaction date(s), posting date(s), amount(s), and vendor name(s) as it appears on your credit card statement, and any notes or confirmation.

When can I get tickets for Virtual Burn experiences?

Tickets will be available from May 12 until September 7 at midnight PDT. You can find the link to order tickets on the Kindling website or go directly to our ticketing page.

How many tickets can I order?

You can order a maximum of one (1) ticket to each Virtual Burn experience per transaction and per email address. You can order a ticket to multiple Virtual Burn experiences in the same transaction using the same email address. If you’d like to order more than one ticket to a particular experience, please complete a new transaction using a different email address. (This restriction is due to the fact that some of the experience platforms require a unique email address for access.)

If I participated in a specific World last year, can I use the same login for access this year?  Will my access or profile still work?

If you already have credentials for a specific World, please contact the producer of that World directly to verify that those credentials still work, or if you need to set up a new profile. Contact information for each World can be found at the bottom of this FAQ.

If I have limited income, are there discounted tickets available?

Some Worlds can be accessed free of charge or at a very low price. Early-bird tickets will be available at a reduced price for all Worlds from May 12 until early July, so get yours before they’re gone. If you are volunteering or otherwise contributing to a World (e.g., as an artist), please contact that World directly to ask if they can provide any additional discount, as each World has a different approach to ticketing. Contact information for each World can be found at the bottom of this FAQ.

Will I receive a ticket or confirmation email after I register or purchase a ticket?

Once you have bought your ticket you will receive an email confirmation with your ticket. Keep this email safe!

You will not have access to the Worlds for Virtual Burn Week until August 22, 2021. Around August 20, you should receive a second email explaining how to use your ticket to access the Worlds. Each world will have slightly different access information, so this is an important email to watch for.

What is the ticket refund or exchange policy?

ALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL. No refunds or exchanges will be issued for any reason. All fees are nonrefundable.

What are the methods of payment accepted?

We can only accept Visa and Mastercard during the ticket purchase process.

Are Virtual Burn tickets transferable? Can I purchase a ticket for someone else?

Yes, a ticket for any Virtual Burning Man Experience may be transferred to another participant before it is used, and you can purchase a ticket to gift or sell to someone else. Simply provide that participant’s email address during the ticket purchase process.

In alignment with Burning Man’s Decommodification Principle, Virtual Burn Event tickets may not be sold for above their face value (the amount originally charged for the ticket sold by Burning Man Project or the producer). Anyone who attempts to sell a ticket for above face value may have all the Virtual Burn Event tickets they purchased canceled without notice or refund. If you choose to transfer your ticket to another participant for a fee, neither Burning Man Project nor the Event’s producer can assist you with collecting this fee.

What terms and conditions are applicable to my purchase of Virtual Burn tickets from Burning Man Project?

The 2021 Virtual Burn Ticket Terms and Conditions, Waiver and Release can be found here. Your participation in the Worlds will be subject to additional terms and conditions applicable to each World and developed by their respective producer. Please contact the Worlds directly with any questions about their terms and conditions. Contact information for each World can be found at the bottom of this FAQ.

What are the age restrictions for Virtual Burn?

You must be at least 18 years old to order a ticket to any Virtual Burn experience. Participation in each experience is subject to the terms and conditions of its producer, which may include an age restriction. If you are ordering a ticket on behalf of someone who is under 18, you contractually agree to the Ticket Terms and Conditions on behalf of the minor.

If I have questions about accessing a World, experience technical issues, or have other concerns specific to a World I am accessing, who do I contact?

Please contact the Worlds directly to resolve issues accessing their experiences. Burning Man Project will not be able to assist with these questions, issues, or concerns.
