Virtual del Fuego 2.0
Summer is starting! Time to BURN! Join us for our second Virtual del Fuego (VDF) online Burn. Kickoff is Friday May 28th 6PM and we run all weekend through Monday afternoon. It is free to participate. All you have to do to join us is come to the website, make a profile, and dive in!
Virtual del Fuego is brought to you by the FirePony community, the org that in a typical year sponsors Playa del Fuego and Constellation Burn. For VDF, we’ve worked hard to be sure we could capture both the Participation and Immediacy aspects of a burn. To do so we created a site with many meeting rooms – some dedicated to theme camps, some dedicated to infrastructure, some created on-the-fly by participants who wished to host an ad-hoc event. There will be dozens of events and rooms to explore. All you have to do to join us is come to the website, make a profile, and dive in!
The rooms by default are Jitsi based, but participants can spin up rooms in different platforms (zoom, twitch, facebook live, bbs.playa.tel. etc.) if they desire. The Jitsi rooms serve as communal and interactive spaces, as opposed to “broadcast” streams such as Twitch, YouTube, or FaceBook Live, which create a performer / spectator relationship. We balance our Civic Responsibility to keep minors from seeing self-expressed adult content with the use of the 18+ rooms. This is a free Decommodified burn, and we use Communal Effort to build our own website on its own server with open source programming so we are not beholden to anyone else’s Terms of Service. Last year we had over 700 people register, 50+ rooms and dozens of events. We are looking forward to being bigger & better this year!
Everyone is welcome to Participate in VDF, and this platform allows us to include those that are differently-abled and may not be able to take the physical rigors of PdF or Burning Man. Self Reliance changes from eating and shelter to mastering tech. Immediacy Rooms gives the event spontaneity, which give the event a true burn feel. There is even an “I’m Feeling Lucky” button which takes you to a random room! When this event is over, we will take down the down the website to Leave No Trace.
